WUSC is always in search of volunteers!

By getting involved with WUSC, you will gain a wealth of knowledge and experience in international development by:

  1. Promoting and participating in unique overseas learning opportunities in developing countries.
  2. Participating in WUSC regional meetings, national leadership training, and Annual International Forum.
  3. Working with UBC’s admissions office, Housing Hospitality Service, and other faculty staff in sponsoring students to pursue their studies at UBC.
  4. Educating and advocating for social change through activities and events while reaching out the entire UBC community and beyond.

Anyone is free to join the WUSC UBC Local Committee. If you want to help come to one of our general meetings and follow us on Facebook where we post all our meeting dates! Non-executive local committee members who wish to be more involved in local committee affairs can help out as volunteers and executive assistants. This provides them with the opportunity to be more engaged in WUSC activities, to better grasp the nature of executive duties and to build up a good rapport with other local committee members which may be of benefit if they wish to run as candidates in the end-of-year executive election.

Executive Positions

Elected Positions

Every year WUSC UBC Local Committee holds elections for certain positions, including:

President

The President is responsible for overlooking the general running of the club to ensure that all of the annual goals are achieved through the delegation of tasks to the other executive members. It is also the President’s responsibility to compile and update any necessary official documents for the club. The President should have an extensive knowledge on the SRP and Campus Engagement portions of the club.

DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • Overlooking the functioning of the local organization
  • Conducting regular check-ins with the SRP Coordinator and Vice Presidents
  • Ensuring regular communication to ensure campus engagement
  • Being a dedicated, reliable and well-informed representative of the club both on and off campus
  • Conducting weekly core executive meetings as well as heading the symposium committee consisting of 3-4 Conference Coordinators in addition to the President
  • Ensuring that members are actively involved in the local committee’s affairs
  • Regularly communicating with other executive members to delegate and oversee tasks
  • Organizing the end-of-year executive election event
  • Ensuring that monthly check-in reports are submitted by all executives and are properly compiled for the coming local committees.

Commitment: 10 to 15 hours per week

Internal Vice President

The Internal Vice President is the person in charge of the club in the absence or retirement of the president. He/she will work hand-in-hand with the president to ensure the annual organization goals are achieved.

DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • Being a dedicated, reliable and well-informed representative of the club
  • Directly in-charge of the campus engagement
  • Plans out campus engagement events with the Events Vice President and member base
  • Leads the weekly members meeting in the absence of the President and is in-charge of minute taking
  • In-charge of all the internal emailing regarding events awareness
  • Reports to the President on agreed basis
  • Ensures there is a clear communication with the SRP Coordinator to ensure the attendance of SRP students at the events and to have the SRP inputs in the events.

Finance Vice President

The Finance Vice President is responsible for overseeing fundraising strategies, advertising revenue and finances surrounding all of the club’s goods and events.

DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • Being a dedicated, reliable and well-informed representative of the club both on and off-campus
  • Representing the club for AMS room bookings
  • Contacting resource groups and donors on campus to fund club events and to gather more funding for the club
  • Creating a suitable budget for club expenses and revenues (including, creating an allowance for a suitable closing balance for the upcoming executive team to begin with)
  • Ensuring that the club expenses stay within the budget (including, frequently reviewing the trial balance and helping to make cost-effective decisions for the club’s events, activities and fundraising)
  • Regularly informing executive members of the club account’s trial balance and any account-related issues
  • Reimbursing members for purchases made for the club
  • Ensuring that the club maintains good standing with the AMS SAC Financial Commission.
  • Writes a short monthly report on personal goals, activities, tasks completed and/or suggestions, for the month (To be compiled at the end of the year for future committees).

Events Vice President

The Event Vice President is in charge of all events that happen under the WUSC organization. They do not do all the work alone, but are responsible for coordinating the group.

DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • Books rooms when necessary
  • Writing a concise event report on Mycommittee after each planned event
  • Organizing potlucks and socials for the executive team + members and for the SRP students
  • Keeping Social Media & Website VP and Photographer updated on events
  • Working with the Vice President to plan events and do major logistics
  • Coordinating with the Global Lounge Officer and VP Internal for any event happening at the Global Lounge
  • Working with the member base to put together events and promote them
  • Write a short monthly report on personal goals, activities, tasks completed and/or suggestions, for the month (to be compiled at the end of the year for future committees)

Social Media & Website Vice President

The Social Media & Website Vice President along with their team is in charge of all the promotions and advertising for events and keeping the WUSC website update.

 

DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • Regularly checking and updating the Facebook group
  • Ensuring that the club and/or its events have a visible presence on campus
  • Sending out newsletters when pertinent
  • Updating and managing the website and mailing list
  • Be part of the organization and promotion of the Symposition
  • In charge of creating all posters that are used for event promotion during the year
  • Writing a short monthly report on personal goals, activities, tasks completed and/or suggestions, for the month (To be compiled at the end of the year for future committees).

Other Positions

Student Refugee Program (SRP) Coordinator

This is a paid position which requires 20 hours per week during summer, and from 10 to 15 hours per week during the rest of the academic year. The SRP Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the coordination of activities which help the SRP students – past and present – to settle into life in their new environment and integrate into WUSC affairs especially in the local committee. This includes monitoring and directing the duties of both the SRP Students Supporter Coordinators, acting as the local committee representative for the WUSC Advisory Committee and maintaining correspondence with WUSC Ottawa through the Campus Engagement Liaison Officer.

 

DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • Being a dedicated, reliable and well-informed representative of the club both on and off-campus
  • In charge of SRP Portion with the club
  • Coordinating the local committee activities for the selection, arrival and welcoming of the new SRP students
  • Monitoring the use of the funds in the Refugee Reserve account and administering the necessary checks (incl. for housing, meals and tuition)
  • Regularly contacting and following up with the SRP students to ensure their smooth transition into the new environment (this includes noting any living, academic and social concerns they may have and referring them to the appropriate resources for assistance)
  • Monitoring and directing the duties of both the Student Support coordinators
  • Maintaining correspondence with WUSC Ottawa through the Regional Liaison Officer
  • Working with the Community Liaison to spearhead the fostering of relationships with local settlement agencies (incl. educating the club on the services available to SRP students and relaying this information to SRP students when necessary)
  • Coordinating the creation of a virtual space for resources and communication modeled off of the SRP students’ own diasporic online networks (incl. posting up resource links on pre-departure, orientation, academic and professional materials; creating an online discussion forum to enable future sponsored students to maintain transitional links with the local committee)
  • Planning out orientation week for the SRP Students with the 2 student supporter coordinators and with the SRP Community Liaison
  • Regularly updating the club president and faculty advisors (Peter Wanyenya, and Prof. Glen Peterson) about all developments and working closely with them to ensure smooth functioning of the program and all duties
  • Creating new work-study positions for the students and ensuring that all SRP students receive adequate support throughout the year
  • Regularly checking with the SRP Student Support Coordinators on anything regarding SRP students’ needs and support – very important!

Global Lounge Officer

The Global Lounge Officer oversees the club’s internal affairs, especially communications within the club and member recruitment.

 

DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • Being a dedicated, reliable and well-informed representative of the club both on and off-campus
  • Being the club’s resource manager (incl. organizing and setting up the office as well as collecting and organizing material resources for events)
  • Typing up and sending minutes to the club’s executives and members
  • Organizing monthly member meetings and one member event per term
  • Being a dedicated, reliable and well-informed representative of the club both on and off-campus
  • Being the booking rep for the Global Lounge and for weekly meetings done in the library bookable rooms
  • Be a representative and program organizer of the Marine Drive Global Lounge
  • Assisting in organizing the club’s collaborative events with on-campus student groups at the Global Lounge
  • Sits one of the Global Lounge Committee and takes part in all the committee meetings.
  • Is in charge of running a PD Session at the Global Lounge
  • In charge of completing all requirements pertaining to the Global Lounge (blog post requirements and etc)
  • Liaising with student other clubs at UBC.
